Ham and Cheese Puff Pastry Pinwheels

🥐 Ham & Cheese Puff Pastry Pinwheels (Mediterranean Style)

Ingredients

Puff Pastry Base

  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed

  • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil

Filling

  • 120 g ham (chicken or turkey ham works well), thinly sliced

  • 1 cup shredded cheese (mozzarella, Gruyère, or Emmental)

  • 2 tablespoons cream cheese or ricotta

  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard (optional)

  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano

  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme

  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Finishing

  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds or nigella seeds (optional)

  • Fresh parsley or basil, finely chopped (optional)


Instructions

  1. Prep the Pastry
    Preheat oven to 200°C (400°F). Line a baking tray with parchment paper. Roll out the puff pastry on a lightly floured surface.

  2. Spread the Base
    Brush lightly with olive oil. Spread cream cheese (or ricotta) evenly over the pastry. Add Dijon mustard if using.

  3. Add Filling
    Layer ham evenly over the pastry. Sprinkle cheese, oregano, thyme, and black pepper.

  4. Roll & Slice
    Roll the pastry tightly into a log. Chill for 10–15 minutes for cleaner cuts. Slice into 1–1.5 cm pinwheels.

  5. Bake
    Arrange pinwheels cut-side up. Brush with egg wash and sprinkle seeds if desired.
    Bake for 18–22 minutes until puffed and golden.

  6. Serve
    Garnish with fresh herbs. Serve warm or at room temperature.
