Crispy Dorito chicken burger with burger cheese, bechamel sauce and lashings of gravy

Ingredients:

For the Crispy Dorito Chicken:

2 large chicken breasts (or 4 chicken tenders)

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

1 teaspoon smoked paprika

Salt and pepper, to taste

2 large eggs, beaten

1 cup crushed Doritos (any flavor you like, but classic nacho cheese works best)

Vegetable oil, for frying

For the Béchamel Sauce:

2 tablespoons butter

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

1 cup whole milk

Salt and pepper, to taste

A pinch of nutmeg (optional)

For the Gravy:

1 cup chicken broth

1 tablespoon butter

1 tablespoon all-purpose flour

Salt and pepper, to taste

A dash of Worcestershire sauce (optional)

For Assembly:

Burger buns (preferably toasted)

Slices of burger cheese (cheddar or American cheese works great)

Lettuce and tomato (optional)

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Crispy Dorito Chicken:

Flatten the Chicken: If using chicken breasts, slice them in half horizontally to make them thinner and cook evenly. You can also use chicken tenders if you prefer.

Coating Station: Set up a breading station. In one bowl, mix flour, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. In another bowl, beat the eggs. In a third bowl, place the crushed Doritos.

Breading Process: Dip the chicken pieces into the flour mixture, coating it well. Next, dip it into the beaten eggs, and finally, coat it in the crushed Doritos, pressing gently to ensure they stick well.

Fry the Chicken: Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Fry the breaded chicken for 4-5 minutes per side, or until golden and crispy, and the internal temperature reaches 165°F (75°C). Remove and place on a paper towel to drain excess oil.

2. Make the Béchamel Sauce:

In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Add the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes, whisking constantly to form a roux.

Slowly whisk in the milk and bring to a simmer. Continue whisking until the sauce thickens, about 3-5 minutes.

Season with salt, pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg (if using). Set aside.

3. Make the Gravy:

In a small saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes until golden to form a roux.

Gradually add the chicken broth, whisking constantly to prevent lumps.

Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for 3-5 minutes, or until it thickens into gravy. Season with salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce to taste.

4. Assemble the Burger:

Toast the burger buns lightly for added crunch.

Place the crispy Dorito chicken on the bottom half of each bun.

Add a slice of burger cheese on top of the hot chicken so it melts slightly.

Spoon some béchamel sauce over the cheese-covered chicken.

Drizzle a generous amount of gravy over the top (don’t be shy with the gravy!).

Top with lettuce, tomato, or any other toppings you like.

Place the top half of the bun on and serve immediately!

Serving:

Serve your crispy Dorito chicken burger with some crispy fries or onion rings on the side, and enjoy all that creamy béchamel sauce and rich gravy in every bite. 🍔🤤
